I think I've listened to the As Tall As Lions' self-titled more times than I could ever count, and it will always be one of my favorite albums of all time, but I feel like their follow-up You Can't Take It With You is severely underrated. It seemed like such a mature next step for the band, although it seems to be the last for ATAL. I will miss them dearly, but lately I've been REALLY digging both new projects that they've spun off.
Kilimanjaro is pretty much As Tall As Lions minus lead singer/ guitarist Dan Nigro, but their sound is extremely different. Kilimanjaro don't seem to have a specific genre targeted, but delve more into an awesome mix of Experimental/Psychedelic Trip-Jazz. They really shine in their improvisational live show, which is rich with awesome grooves, interesting and diverse samples, and tons of originality. You can definitely hear hints of As Tall As Lions, but I have high hopes that Kilimanjaro will reach heights far greater than their previous incarnation.
And yes, that was a mountain pun. I'm going to bed.
P.S. I think it's awesome that one of the guys is tripping on 'shrooms on these live songs, can you imagine how intense it would be to be on stage, tripping balls, playing free-form jazz in front of hundreds of people? Seems like a fun time.
